Frozen Hot Water Pipes: Why the Hot Side Freezes First

First, protect the water heater
Frozen water heater pipes carry an extra risk the rest of this site doesn't cover: the tank itself. If the frozen section is anywhere near a tank-style heater, deal with the heater before you thaw anything:
- Turn it down or off. Electric: switch off its breaker. Gas: set the control to "pilot" or "off" per the label on the tank. Thawing frozen hot water pipes, step by step

- Open the hot handle at the affected faucet and leave it open. It vents trapped pressure and signals the moment melting starts.
